Vineyard Tools

Making It Happen in Vineyards of the 19th Century

A “vineyard” is a land plot of grape bearing vines, grown

mainly for winemaking and often as a “cash crop”. The

science, practice and study of vineyard production are

referred to as “viticulture.” Tools used in all aspects of this culture

are referred to as vineyard tools. These can be as simple as hand

tools or as complex as vehicles and large equipment.

Within the California Wine Museum Collection, there are over sixty-five original tools once used in the wine making process. From row markers to grafting devices to billhooks, the collection exemplifies the harvesting toils as well as the fine tuned vineyard care.
